Reply:My grandmother grew up during the Japanese colonial era--she told me once that apples were among the priciest fruit in those days since they had to be imported from Japan. I guess back then the ruling administration generally tried to keep as many goods going out of Taiwan to Japan and not the other way around. So she buys a lot of apples these days and accompanies them with various sayings about how apples make one pretty, intelligent, etc., which apparently she didn't invent because I've heard others outside the family say the same sorts of things.
