Suggestions on portable navigation systems?

I am interested in purchasing a portable navigation system. I've been doing some online research but am also interested in consumer input. Does anyone own one? Which do you recommend and why?

I'd suggest you seek out the Consumer Report for Aug. 2005??? which had excellent suggestions and considerations for nav system. You'll have to go the public library and see if they have back copies. CU wants a subscription fee to their website.

I've learned I do want it to hang in the windshield with a clear view overhead of the device -- I won't have to add an antenna. The maps need constant upgrading. Go online with the manufacturing web site to see what those upgrade maps would costs. I'm holding out until the cell phone models get better, but I might make the plunge into a portable like you mention.

Personal experience is it was invaluable. We got diverted off the main highway driving a rental car. After a few turns in a residential neighborhood, hit the assistance directions and we were driving through the rest of the city on the back roads until we rejoined the highway.

Get the portable. They are hot, hot, hot items for auto breakins.
Reply:although there are great systems such as TomTom and other stuff, the company named Magellan has good prices, and excellent reliability. good luck!
